Floral 1

The first set in the Floral series is pretty straightforward. Flowers from around New York City. Some from living plants. Others from cut flowers.

I bring the cut flowers up because in recent years I try my best not to support this industry. Just look into the rose industry in Colombia and Ecuador and you will never buy these flowers again. It’s a shameful slave industry.

But more importantly, the idea is horrible. Let’s cut these plants to death and then watch them die in the beauty of our own home. Wouldn’t it be best to buy a living plant and nourish it through a long life? Wouldn’t that be better for the environment?

Don’t get me wrong. I have brought cut flowers home from work. Left by clients and headed for the garbage. Still too beautiful and wonderful smelling to pass up. I just don’t pay for them or seek them out for my own home.

I am not preaching or pretending to be superior. I make bad choices like everyone else. I have bought items from Urban Outfitters even though the CEO is a conservative monster who gave money to Santorum. And still Anthropologie tries to sell us gay lifestyles while legislating against us.

What I am saying is that I don’t buy from them anymore. I am trying to become better about who gets my money. I am also saying that it’s hard to not be a hypocrite. Everyone is on some level.

Today’s example of modern hypocrisy comes from Facebook. Lots of friends posting a new Kraft ad with a scantily clad beefcake. Hot and intriguing. Several people who posted the link have had rants against genetically modified organisms and Monsanto. Not one of them realized that Kraft is a huge part of that problem.

All they were concerned with was sharing a titillating story created by advertising executives. Sharing it first without thinking about it. It used to be think before you speak. It should now be think before you share.
