Frequently in my life, it takes a bit of time to nail things down. Here with this third Tyra Banks, I achieve again the goal of this entire series.

This is the third version which means at this point the top layer is a photo layer. This usually means a composite image of photographs I have personally taken. In this particular piece it creates exactly the layer upon layer overdose I am trying to achieve.

For years I looked at ethnographic art in wonder. How could you marry a hundred year old textile with new repair work featuring Spongebob Squarepants? I will tell you how. Necessity. And that marriage is essential to everything I do. Too much? Not nearly enough.

In this piece I adore the face and headdress. It’s modern-day plastic surgery by Dr. Frankenstein. And that dot pattern on the lower half are from images I took at a Yayoi Kusama show in Chelsea several years ago. I love those pumpkins! Someone send me the new Louis Vuitton edition!

If I haven’t revealed too much already, that’s how I am dealing with these trash icons. Meta, meta, meta. It’s more about the projection and personalization of each image. But isn’t that what icons are?

  1. I would love to see some detail shots…

  2. I will get on those detail shots. I will post them here in the comments, k?

    1. I couldn’t put them in the comments, so I just dropped them into the post.

  3. They could really stand on their own, those details… beautiful abstractions, great color!! xo

    1. It’s nice because they are small pieces. Just 10 inches at most. So these detail shots show off the work quite nicely. And I love the colors in this one too!
