Garage 5 is all diagonal brights and curves. Darkness coming in at black reflective glass and support structure black monoliths. A little bit of 2001 never hurt anyone.
Lately I have been trying to ween us of the insidious diet of Hollywood blockbusters and get us to return to our art film alternative roots. Some with greater success than others.
Louis Malle’s Black Moon was the biggest letdown. A surrealist take on the already surreal Alice in Wonderland. The movie only excelled in the realm of bad dubbing.
All the plot points that were worth anything were overlooked. The unexplained world war between men and women was so amazing. I wanted more. But then we end up in a house of madness and that momentum died with the rest of the picture.
The doc The Wolfpack was so much better. I haven’t seen a film that left me wanting more this much in a long time. I highly recommend it even if it doesn’t answer many of the questions it raises.
We then went on to watch Fellini’s I Vitteloni. One of the few Fellini films we haven’t seen. So beautiful. Probably the best thing I have seen lately.
Then onto Do I Sound Gay? A lot of the information and interviews are amazing. If you can get past the self loathing tone of the narrator it isn’t awful. I couldn’t get past it.
As someone who sounds gay, I was slightly infuriated. It kind of damaged the film for me. Leaving me to place it behind Black Moon. Mostly due to some memorable imagery.
