2010 brings the Street Paint Series back to old school graffiti. Shots of lots of stuff I would call nu style or wild style. Even a picture of one of the artists in the act.
Only one escapes this paradigm. In Gods Rat. Covered up and ominous. Like a message someone didn’t want you to see. Maybe it’s not god’s wrath we should fear but his rat. Who knows?
Everything else is from 5 Points in Long Island City. Taken after a go at PS1. It’s a regular summer pilgrimage that often ends with a brotastic rave like vibe.
Initially the art was fantastic. But now it’s peppered with overhyped art stars and seems less interesting every subsequent year. The music line up always has great people though.
Last year I got to see Trust and Light Asylum. This year I am hoping to see L-Vis 1990 and Hyetal. So it does offer great options in the way of underground electronic artists. I just wish the art were as underground.
Frequently the art is as dated as wild style graffiti. A leftover from the days when hip hop was interesting. Now it’s just Taylor Swift. Ask anyone who extolls the virtues of Kanye West their feelings on Eminem. If their answer is anything positive put them on your aesthetic black list.
So now PS1 has a bit of Eminem in their curation. It’s frequently a mess and doesn’t reflect what is really going on in the community it should embrace. This is probably because it is an extension of MoMA. An institution of high art in a city that values wealth over everything.
Don’t get me wrong. I love MoMA but sometimes it gets me down. An impossible ideal full of faults.
