2007 Street Paper

The 2007 set of Street Paper is just six images. Diverse in its color schemes and styles.

The first image I found on my street. Down by Ninth Avenue. A strange piece in a strange location. Everything else is from downtown.

There just isn’t much in the way of paper pieces in Hell’s Kitchen. Occasionally you will find tags or vandalized advertisements. But it’s rare to find paper or good paint. Downtown is a different beast altogether.

In some neighborhoods it grows like fungus. SoHo, Chelsea, Tribeca, The Bowery and the East Village are great places to find layers of work. Note that all these neighborhoods are trendier, wealthier and have numerous luxury stores.

So it seems to follow wealth in Manhattan. Specifically in the Chelsea art gallery area, it appears to be an attempt to catch the eye of gallery owners. Although, sometimes the message seems to alienate that very same audience.

Or maybe I am wrong and the person who does those chicken carcasses with penises for heads now has representation. Maybe it’s a bit too whimsically aggressive for the Chelsea art scene. I hope it’s just that they don’t give a fuck.

Notice the Matt Siren piece. Lovely Battlestar Galactica, pharaoh, death’s head with the trademark girl’s face on Pinky. Gorgeous piece!

The third piece is from the same people who did two pieces in a prior set. The wooden figure featured in a Margaret Keane like girl and a cereal box.

The fourth is Billi Kid. It’s aggressive in it’s internet meme/reality show aesthetic. Not a fave of the optimism in his other work but that’s just my darkness talking.

The final two pieces are perfect in their imperfection. Shredded cut and paste idealism. Flourescent colors or just black and white. See how this is all connecting to the work I do?
