Here is one of my oldest existing pieces. MM3 is as early as it is naïvely prophetic. Most people wouldn’t dare show something they created while so young. As always, I dare.
So this was a project for my art class in my junior year of high school. I mentioned in a prior post that may or may not have posted by now. Remember it’s non-linear around here.
To refresh your memory, I had a student teacher arrive with crazy new ideas. Like Xerox art and mail art. I want to say his name was Robert but I honestly can’t remember. So he wheeled a Xerox machine into the classroom and let it rip. I instantly bonded with him and that Xerox machine.
I remember that frequently he would walk me from the school to my waiting mother’s car. Looking back I see that he knew I was being severely bullied and he was offering some protection. Let it be known that teachers must provide explosive ideas and tremendous kindness to be remembered as a legend.
Back to the piece, this is obviously my childhood response to Andy Warhol. I chose the original Marilyn. Pre-fame with a freshly washed face ready for a day at the beach.
Then I cut two checkerboards of the same image back into her face by weaving the pieces into the corners of the original. Then I just repeatedly made copies of the copy until the graininess is over the top.
I should mention as a brief side note that I am pretty sure that this was the piece that got me accepted to Governor’s School that summer. Oh the bittersweet memory of Governor’s School.
My current knowledge of symbolism leaves me astounded at the symbology of this piece. The creation was so organic and intuitve. Almost like I was communicating with my future self.
Which reminds me how much this piece is like the current piece I am working on of model Karlie Kloss. The major difference being then I would do one piece and be satisfied. Now I have to do a million tests before starting the actual piece.
