Melting Sandwich Planet

Melting Sandwich Planet is a sad story and a sad but great image.  The former window advertisement has taken a bacterial ridden schlep thanks to gravity. Like a menu meets a Petri dish.

Petri just auto capitalized. I wonder who that was named after.

So back to Sandwich Planet. The original was further up Ninth Avenue. It was small with about three tables but did great take out. The Reuben and Croque Monsieur were tasty.

After so many years of success they decided to move to the corner of 39th Street. The new space was large and they blew their savings on the interior.

Super slick and very Tokyo the new interior was all white tile with a custom wall of graffiti. Not normal graffiti but Lichtenstein slick. Like Super Flat from Barcelona. And get this, it was kiln fired onto the white tiles. High end custom.

It was lovely and the doors could open up two of the three walls in good weather. But all of this wasn’t enough to save it from the wasteful design overhead and the bad idea to move.

It never had a chance. And this sign is the only thing that the new space really achieved. A relic of decay and failure.
