Lights is one of the very first sets I took with my newly purchased Canon Powershot. It was down in SoHo back in the old days. Lighting equipment for a movie shoot.
These are common street finds. Whole streets cordoned off from the public. Giant trailers for staff and celebrities. Common around here.
The notices go up the night before. Legal bills that warn of a movie shoot. Then they show up and start filling the sidewalk with equipment like this.
What drew me to them was their huge size and how beautiful they were as objects. The Laura Palmer plastic wrap was what nailed it for me. Beautifully obscured and inert.
It doesn’t bother me that the plastic wrap causes a soft focus. A normal irritant has become a strength for these pieces. It adds rather than detracts.
Sometimes things without any embellishment is enough of a pull to my eye. Most times it is careful humor. More frequently it is the layer of images that makes something more powerful than all of these ideas.
That’s what you are getting here. Carefully protected objects veiled and secret. More hidden symbolism found in not so everyday objects.
