Where was I in explaining the mess you see before you? Before I start that again let me state that this is the third iteration. Which makes the order white, grey and this is black.
Back to the issues. I would say the largest issue is the scale of the cut. For a six inch square the pieces of the puzzle are far too tiny. Each one of these took about 6 hours to physically piece the puzzle together.
The bottom right corner was a nightmare to construct. The pieces are smaller than toothpicks. Knowing which ones go where was a nightmare. Nothing fit and pieces were lost.
This was a problem with the original line pattern that lasted over several months. Trying different line patterns. Thicker starting lines. Eliminating duplicate shapes.
Refining and cleaning the patterns was a tremendous amount of work. Finding all the orphan pieces that were too easily lost or damaged by the cutter. Filling those orphan pieces with surrounding tones to make the cut simpler.
Not to mention that this is not the first time I have cut this piece. I have a series (over a dozen) of cuts from early on that I never tried to piece together. Mainly because they were uncoated like these printed pieces and the cutter damaged the layer of ink too much.
