I can’t remember whether this is the black or the grey replacement of this series. Before I write the third demo post I will research it.
To explain what I am talking about this is the second rotation of the series. The first layers have been used in the primary image. This is the second set of combinations that could happen with nine possible layers.
In the first version you start to see the problems with the piece. The original idea is to cut the magazine layers and then build the pieces on maple art boards.
The result would be super slick with a nice varnished finish. What happened with the demo was anything but slick.
The issues start to crop up one by one. In no time the pile on ruins the idea of perfection. That’s when the block began.
I really have struggled with the completion of this piece since early 2013. Numerous attempts at cuts occurred. The cutter actually died and started cutting squares as parallelograms. A fight with the company ensued and eventually a replacement machine happened.
Underneath it all was the fear of messing up one of the original magazine pages. The back issue this image comes from now goes for twenty to thirty bucks. And right there I was stuck. What if I ruined the idea?
