DVF Distortion is a Meat Packing District self portrait. Someone poorly put up reflective Mylar and I took advantage. The score is 0-1.
As I keep going over these older pieces several ideas are plaguing me. The first being a tour guide discussing Frank Stella’s attempt to make mature work. The idea of when I will make or have I made mature work looms.
The second idea is what are the prevailing themes. Distortion and reflection. Self portraiture. Color and magic. All in a tidy and darkly humorous context.
I think even before I heard the Stella tour guide at the Whitney I was pondering a big break. Using this site to look at it all and see where to go next. The saddest part is I still don’t know.
When recently talking to strangers about my work they asked about the sizes of my work. I explained the intimate nature of the pieces. How I think that large pieces are an overcompensation.
But then something in me knew I should be working bigger. At the same time I still don’t know. I wonder if Frank Stella had a better game plan.
