The 2011 Street Paper set sees nine images. A hefty set with better imagery than the 2010 set. These are all Meatpacking District shots with the exception of that last picture. That is from Houston Street near the Bowery.
That Bowery piece is an institution. Claiming to have pieces done by Haring, Scharf and Fairey it’s a regular wow for my walks downtown.
The piece is curated so the art changes regularly. Tony Goldman and Jeffrey Deitch are former curators. Great work all around!
The rest of the set sees all the regulars return. Often the pieces find humor in their couplings. Future Cop! versus a quote by Talking Heads versus someone’s opinion about that quote.
Ronald McDonald in period costume is fantastic! I mean, what is that? And Rich Uncle Pennybags behind the decks is such great commentary. If the Meatpacking District isn’t a corporate monopoly and bastardization of underground club culture, then what is?
Go to that neighborhood on a Friday and Saturday night and view young girls aged by spray tans, too blonde extensions and dresses appropriate for a Jersey Housewives reunion holding back the hair of their friend who is vomiting onto her Louboutins. They are all out clubbing like Carrie from Sex in the City with their awful packs of bros in tow.
It’s a beautiful sight that I wish I had photographed. I need some videos of those girls walking in heels. It’s a laugh riot!
Sometimes, I struggle with the desire to use art to communicate with people. Like the rest of life, I mostly just talk to myself. Future and past versions.
Concert going caused this in me. After numerous negative experiences with people I had hoped would be like minded, I realized what a pit fandom can become.
Sometimes I am gripped with horror that people who like my work may be horrible people. Thank goodness it’s a passing horror.
