2004 Fireworks

My first attempt at shooting the annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. This particular year was my last on the East River. Now the festivities have been moved to the Hudson River due to the lovely Hudson River Park running along the west side of Manhattan.

This has been a point of contention for the residents of Queens and Brooklyn. There are rumors that this year the fireworks will return to the East River. Maybe I will be off from work and get to go shoot them again.

All of these photos were shot using an extended shutter speed. Once again, light trails a la Heaven or Las Vegas. The repeating themes continue on and on.

The first picture in this set is probably one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken. It looks absolutely fake and Photoshopped. But it is not. A lovely explosion of the mind and eye. The color gradation is impeccable. It’s as close to perfection as I am ever likely to get.

The rest of the set runs the gamut from neon smears to galaxies birthing stars. I guess the metaphor of fireworks is deeply affecting to us all. Humans gathered together. Celebrating our control of fire. Watching the birth of the universe.

A similar experience is had by going to the movies. A shared experience involving light. But fireworks disposes of all the propaganda of film. Pure neutral beauty.

It’s another one of those experiences that impresses all ages and brings childlike wonder out in adults. You get it. I love fireworks!
