2004-2012 Signage 1

First in the Signage series treads on familiar territory. The use of text in my work is frequent so it’s only natural I would pay attention to the signage around New York City.

Most of these signs have quite a bit of age on them. The pig from Pork Shop must be from at least fifty years ago. Only then was cannibalism an opportunity to salivate.

Other older signs show the age of peeling or just the remnants of the adhesive residue left behind. Both causing my desires to flare. The need to peel the edge of the letter is as strong as the desire to use Goo Gone to remove the residue.

One new sign, Commercial Space Available, hints at the occult leanings of the real estate market. The pentagram is left unfinished. I guess they offer completion in the closing of the deal.

The large Park is littered with signage. Support armature litters the image nearly as much as text. This type of visual pollution is rampant in the parking lot/car wash that is the west side of Manhattan.

As with all these photo series, you can see the influence and reflection. Decay, text, layers all mirror the influences that help create this work. It’s a recipe.
